Driving home at midnight last night and I noticed the Roadmaster was blowing cold air out the vents, then the “low coolant” light came on, the temp gauge climbed up and then I stopped and a huge could of steam appeared

I was an eventful couple of minutes

I pulled into a parking lot and was greeted by this:

Kinja'd!!!

GM calls it a valve, looks like it’s just a flow restrictor.

‘ Fixed’ it this morning:

Kinja'd!!!

Got really hot on the 3 mile trip home, turns out I didn’t bleed all the air out

That akward moment when the winter beater breaks in the first day of real snow and you have to drive the car you were trying to keep out of the snow...

They fail so often that they are kept up near the cash register with the spark plug grease and candy bars at the local parts store. (Really)

And yet were used for how many years across how many generations?

I don't know why they would add a reducer in the middle of a hose. Why not just have the inlet of the core be smaller? Or the port on the engine?

Not sure. On s ome applications, a similar restriction is achiev ed at the intake gasket, which you are NOT supposed to open up to match the a ctual port size.
